Monday Miscellany

1. Ben returned to work today. I find myself looking around for the adult. Certainly I'm not the one in charge...

2. Juliette weighed a whopping 8lb, 5oz on Saturday morning. That girl is working on some enviable cheek chub.

3. Dear God, thank you for lactation consultants. Amen.

4. I am not remotely into football, and yet I can't tell you how glad I am that the darling Manning boy and his teammates trounced the insidious NE Patriots. And how sweet it was to see that other darling Manning boy rooting for his little brother so wholeheartedly. We Persheys like the Mannings so much that Ben uncharacteristically bought Oreo cookies because Eli and Peyton were on the package having their lick-the-center-faster contest.

5. The CA primary is tomorrow, and I'm still undecided. I'm also undecided as to how much I intend to chatter about presidential politics this season on ye olde blog; before I was a pastor I chattered unabashedly. It's not like this blog is at all church-related, but it's not anonymous, and I've become rather conservative about airing my liberalism publicly. Not that one can be religious or talk religion without involving politics, as the gospel is inherently political. Itchy subject. Hmm.

6. I finished reading my first post-baby book: The Used World, by Haven Kimmel. It was such a relief to love this book, considering how much I adored The Solace of Leaving Early and did not adore Something Rising (Light and Swift). Kimmel writes so darned well, and employs her seminary education in a way that makes this seminary educated girl deliriously happy and not a little jealous. She writes the way I wish I could write.

7. Lisa comes tomorrow! Yay for visitors from the East.

8. Juliette, Juliette, Juliette. Juliette.

  1. #1: My oldest is now out on his own, and I still wonder if I did enough. I tell you this not to discourage, just to tell you that it is universal. You're doing great!

    #5: Um hm. Yep.

#6: I love Haven Kimmel. Must be the small town Indiana thing. "Zippy" and "She Got Up Off the Couch" were sublime.

    #8: Big smiles!!!!

You are the cutest! Hats off to you Katherine. You are home alone with a baby and still find 8 things to write about on a Monday! God Bless you! I can't lie, I'm stumped on the presidential race as well! We, at least, have another month till our primaries! Good luck with that one! Love you!

  3. Wow. You already finished a book? Nice work!

(I had visions of nice, quiet nursing sessions with reading, but Zora was a fast fast eater. Now, she's a fast fast runner.)

  5. The Solace of Leaving Early -- yet another book in common!

I'm loving hearing about life with Juliette!

  6. Belated Congratulations Katherine and Ben. Besides bonding with Aubs the best part of the middle of the night feedings was reading time. After the first time I nodded off with her in my arms I started picking up a book each time I fed her. If only I could reclaim that reading time with a 5 year old in the house.

  7. Thanks for the recommendation - just put Haven Kimmel on my wishlist.

RE #5 - if you get any more insights on this, I sure would love to hear them. I'm in the same spot myself. I keep writing a sentence here and deleting it....so I see what you mean.

  8. #5...I hope you vote tomorrow, mostly. Secondarily, I hope you vote, "YES, WE CAN"

    Fearless Joy,

  10. You are doing great. My baby is all grown up and a UMC pastor in CT and I can still remember how much I couldn't get done (and she was a good baby). Sounds like Juliette is doing wonderfully.

I understand your wanting to be careful about politics and being a pastor - tricky. I was for Hilliary, but now, not so sure, leaning toward Obama. A pastor in CT has somthing to do with my possible change. Glad you have a visitor from the East coming - good people!

  12. #3. Right there with you. Why is it that "natural" things don't always come naturally?
But #2 suggests it's all okay in the end.

  13. Found you from Kester's blogroll.

Geesh...great taste in music you got!!! Jeff Buckley is the shiznit. I saw Jolie Holland at this little place in LA when i was in grad school. Great voice.

You heard much of Neko Case?

    Cheers.

  14. Oh, I LOVED The Used World! It's fun to know another Kimmel fan. I liked all three in the trilogy and whenever I'm blue I pull out A Girl Named Zippy, and it never fails to leave me laughing hysterically.

  15. I haven't "met" you since I'm new to participating with (but not yet a member of) RevGalBlogPals, but I've been waiting with the rest for news of this baby. I joined in the waiting only during the last month, but as the mother of two (2 yr 8 months and 7 months) I'm always interested in a new baby story!!!

Anyway, LOVED your list this week. I have had more than my share of breastfeeding problems and helpers. A good site for assistance at all hours of the night and all ages of babies is www.kellymom.com

I got more books read when I was nursing my newborns than any other time in my life. It was awesome. Even if I had a hard time juggling book and baby, eventually they would fall asleep and I could just read, read, read. Good times!

Blessings on you and your new adventure!

  16. I have been thinking about you a lot lately. Robert is still home and I think that might be a crutch of mine right now.
I am still working on my post baby book. I am almost done though.
I can't agree enough about your thoughts on football and the Mannings. I loved seeing big brother rooting too.
    And lastly, more Juliette. :)

  17. I'll never forget the first time I took Sarah for a walk by myself and in the middle of it I stopped, panic-stricken, and started wondering if someone was going to see me with a baby and get mad that I had her out by myself. Such a random weird thought but I just totally felt like I couldn't possibly be the boss of her. So I can relate to your #1. And #3...oh my goodness I am SO there with you too. Glad to see you blogging. I check up on your all the time!

And for what it's worth, I'd love to read your political ramblings!

  18. You are doing so much better than I did the first day Mike went back to work and left me with Evan (our first baby) I cried and cried after he left. I couldn't believe anyone would leave me alone with our poor baby.
    But we survived :0)
Enjoy getting to know your sweet little girl :0)
That bonding time is so precious!

  19. I just commented on Marie's blog --your poem is beautiful. Just stunning. Needed to share that with you. It is so strange -- I read both Elizabeth's and Marie's blogs -- it feels voyueristic, but I can't help myself. I feel like a five year old on the playground wanting to rush up to the collective three of you and ask "Will you be my friend?" I am glad we literally bumped into each other at General Assembly, and I look forward, hopefully, to cultivating a friendship. That sounds a little intense, I suppose. Sorry!
